50 Cent, whose real name is Curtis Jackson, first surfaced as a potential target for violence after the Oct. 30 execution-style shooting of Run-DMC’s Jam Master Jay, whose real name was Jason Mizell.
The 27-year-old rapper was arrested just before 2 a.m. Tuesday after police responded to a complaint about an SUV double-parked outside the Copacabana nightclub, said Sgt. Mike Wysokowski, a police spokesman.
When officers approached the vehicle, they saw a .25 caliber handgun on the floor of the SUV, Wysokowski said. A further search turned up a .45 caliber pistol. Police said both weapons were loaded.
50 Cent and the four other men with him were each charged with two counts of criminal possession of a weapon.
The rapper’s lawyer could not immediately be reached for comment.
Immediately after Jam Master Jay’s death, investigators learned of a threat to 50 cent and, at their suggestion, the rapper canceled a performance.
Police later downplayed any suggestion that Jam Master Jay’s killers were after 50 Cent.
Jam Master Jay discovered 50 Cent and helped produce his first album five years ago.
The Jam Master Jay shooting is still unsolved.
